Australia is a mysterious land, geographically far removed from most of the world. But, is it really that mysterious? It certainly has its fair share of challenges like anywhere else; It also has an abundance of natural and man-made beauty like anywhere else. The only truly mysterious part about the land down under is that it reminds me so much of my life back in South Africa; it's unreal.

Before moving to Australia, we didn’t know much about the country, to be honest. Not because we didn’t like the idea of it, but I think mostly due to the rhetoric back home. It was portrayed by many as the land of milk and honey, accessible only to those who were “fortunate enough”.

But, of course, my assumptions about a place I knew very little about and never bothered to look up were not entirely correct. Australia, though abundant, is not perfect - like anywhere else in the world. It has, however, chosen our family to live here, and I am excited to experience all of its many quirks and wonders.

Here Are 5 Questions We Frequently Get Asked Since Immigrating to Australia

  1. What About All Those Snakes & Spiders?

I haven’t seen a single snake in the three years since we moved here… maybe I need to get out more? Still no giant huntsman spider or deadly redback encounters either (touch wood!).

  1. You Must Be Loving All That Sunshine?

We’re in Melbourne, mate. Four seasons in one day! Think Cape Town weather… but colder.

  1. Do The Kids Have An Aussie Accent Yet?

Nope. Melbourne is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. The kids are exposed to cultures, languages, and accents from all around the world.

  1. Is It Really That Safe?

Safer than many parts of the world, yes. But crime happens everywhere, and we are always aware of this. What stands out is how inclusive and diverse Victoria is, which creates a real sense of community.

  1. Kangaroos & Koalas In Your Backyard?

I wish, but no. Just like lions don’t roam Cape Town’s streets. Fortunately, Aus has heaps of zoos & sanctuaries. Fun fact: koalas sleep nearly all day, and as our luck would have it, they’re always napping when we visit!
